What Is End of Life?
Every day we receive inquiries from customers: “Our switch has been discontinued,” “This model is no longer in production,” “The supplier says they don’t carry this module anymore.” This moment is familiar to most IT professionals – but what does it actually mean?
End of Life (or EOL) is the point at which a manufacturer announces it will stop producing or supporting a specific product. This doesn’t mean the product stops working – it simply means it’s no longer sold in the manufacturer’s official catalog.
The Stages of the Process
End of Sale (EOS) – The manufacturer stops selling the product. It can still be found in existing inventory.
End of Support (EOSS) – The manufacturer stops providing technical support. The product works, but there’s no one to call.
End of Life (EOL) – Everything stops. No sales, no support, no updates. The product still works, but you’re on your own.
Why Is This a Problem for Organizations?
The most common scenario: imagine you have a switch that’s been running perfectly for 5 years. The manufacturer announces this model is EOL. What do you do? If the switch works, there’s no reason to replace it. But what happens if it breaks and you need a replacement part?
